By Magritte

in La Révolution surréaliste, Paris, no.12, December 15th 1929
In 1927, André Breton and I, each in turn, caught sight of an ad for a certain aperitif hanging from the wall in a bistro. We exchanged looks that neither reason nor insanity could explain. We had the same complicit look another time, when I suggested taking his picture with his eyes closed. Well, his eyes are closed, but eyes open or shut, one can’t forget that his mind was seeking the Truth through poetry, love and liberty-Rene Magritte

Bardot, Tzara.
L'AMOUREUSE.

Lee Miller's 1937 picture of their picnic in Cannes, France. Nusch and Paul Eluard, Roland Penrose, Man Ray, Ady Fidelin.
Paul Eluard's Poem:
Elle est debout sur mes paupieres
Et ses cheveux sont dans les miens,
Elle a la forme de mes mains,
Elle a la couleur de mes yeux,
Elle s'engloutit dans mon ombre
Comme une pierre sur le ciel.
Elle a toujours les yeux ouverts
Et ne me laisse pas dormir.
Ses reves en pleine lumiere
Font s'evaporer le soleils,
Me font rire, pleurer et rire,
Parlar sans avoir rien a dire.
WOMAN IN LOVE
She is standing on my eyelids
And her hair is in mine,
She has the shape of my hands,
She has the color of my eyes,
She is engulfed in my shadow
Like a stone against the sky.
Her eyes are always open
She does not let me sleep.
Her dreams in broad daylight
Make suns evaporate,
Make me laugh, weep and laugh,
And speak without anything to say.
